This photograph emerged from a completely unplanned encounter. In September 2023, while driving towards Melrose on the southern side of the Flinders Ranges, I came across expansive canola fields in full bloom. The interplay between the sky and the vibrant yellows of the early spring flowers immediately captured my attention, creating a visual harmony that compelled me to stop the car and reach for my camera.
I spent time walking through the landscape, observing its changing relationships of light, colour, and form, and produced a sequence of images in quiet contemplation of the scene.
Among them, this photograph resonated most strongly. Its power lies in its simplicity: an almost wabi-sabi interpretation of the road, where beauty emerges through restraint, imperfection, and the quiet poetry of an ordinary day.
